So long, and thanks for all the fish..

I took part in A Small Web July: an initiative to spend less time on the corporate web for the month. For me that predominantly meant less time on walled-garden social media and I felt so much better for it.

I spent more time working on my website, seeing friends, allotmenteering, hiking, making art and even making a game. It reaffirmed what I’ve been deliberating for a few months now: stepping away from Instagram.

What always stopped me before was the need to stay in touch with friends and following the creatives and advocates whose work I enjoy. However, if the indie web has shown me anything, it’s that there’s just as much, if not more, life happening elsewhere.

I’m currently putting my energies into my website (I’m migrating all my old IG posts over there too) and will no longer be posting here for the foreseeable. If all goes well, I may even delete my account by the end of the year.

I don’t know that I desperately need another microblogging service. I’m unlikely to go back to Mastodon, though I do still have a profile there. Instead, I plan to share updates on my website, but am likely to push these out to micro.blog (it has nice safety features and no algorithm). It doesn’t require you to be on the platform to see the Discover timeline, though there is a generous free tier and more features if you do create an account. My approach will still be my own website first though.

Instead, I’m embracing the fundamental technologies of the old web: rss feeds, web-rings, pixel cliques, forums. You can find me on my website or the 32-bit Cafe Forum (close friends are welcome to my email if you don’t have it already). Otherwise, hopefully you’re using a platform that publishes an RSS feed (Substack does😊) or even better posting on your own website - go on, make a website!!

Thanks for all the memories.

See you, space cowboy💜
