It's been awhile since i've picked up my fineliners. However, I was inspired by a recent hike I did with my friend, to capture a representation of this folly, Whitehill Tower, in Caterham, Surrey.

Excellent talks at OpenUK Digital today by Ana Rodrigues and Calum Ryan on the indie web, its benefits and potential. I particularly enjoyed Ana's thoughts on what indie looks like and contributing, and Calum's summary of the history of the London Homebrew Website Club. So inspiring😊

For today's NanoPoblano post, getting out of my comfort zone and revisiting a previous draft from 2022 inspired by the words of Hailey Magee on the difference between kindness and people-pleasing: https://straydogstrut.co.uk/posts/2024/11/05/pathological-altruism-and-me/

A post about how I built my website for my third NanoPoblano entry. Of course I broke my site while writing about it, hence the late posting😅

In my haste to get something up, I missed the obvious: an introductory post. Well here we go:

Starting #NanoPoblano off in a bit of a rush, unsurprisingly, but at least we've started😅

I'm planning to take part in NanoPoblano again this year: a friendly and relaxed month of blogging and supporting each other. In past years, i've really enjoyed the community feel and discovering new blogs.

Overslept, apologised profusely to the cats for missing their breakfast. Rushed around doing all the chores I wanted to get out the way early. Started making lunch at noon and realised I wasn't hungry..
Then I remembered the clocks have gone back🤦♀️

Today I learned you can change file created dates on macOS using:
touch -t 202410231735 / /Users/daniel/Projects/Web\ Dev/personal-blog/src/notes/4.md
..where
202410231735
is 23rd October 2024 at 5:35pm and/Users/...
is the path to the file.Useful for fudging the dates of all the content i'm migrating here from elsewhere😅

I've decided to stick with Eleventy to build my personal site. While it's more work - and I always under estimate just how much work - i'm really keen to scratch that itch of building something myself.
I do really like Micro.blog and the principles behind it so i'm not going to abandon it entirely. I'm thinking I can use it as part of my "syndicate elsewhere" strategy.

We watched The Boy and the Heron this evening and I was honestly disappointed. It is a gorgeous film and I liked the way the different creatures were animated. However, it really fell flat for me. I understand there’s symbolism for grief and moving on, but this isn’t conveyed in a coherent or meaningful way.
I think what really lets this movie down compared to Studio Ghibli’s other films is the lack of character development. There wasn’t any depth to the characters to drive the plot. The initial premise felt like an excuse to introduce an interesting otherworldly realm, but one that ultimately had no meaning.
I wouldn’t recommend this film. There are so many other Studio Ghibli films to recommend - personal favourites are Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Howl’s Moving Castle - and I’d hate to think this might be the first Studio Ghibli film people encounter🙁

Having too much fun setting up my new Micro.blog and making some tweaks to the custom theme. I've created a Changelog to track my changes😄

PlayStation Access members Nathan, Dave and Rob have a new podcast called RedShirt Cinema Club. They're watching all the Star Trek movies on a quest to make Rob a Star Trek fan.
I'm really enjoying revisiting the old movies, learning about the historical context, and getting their impressions😁
