Jessica Jones

I started watching Netflix Original series Jessica Jones tonight while Lizzie is out visiting a friend. I’ve never heard of the Marvel character before so I had no idea what to expect going in. Netflix’s new trick of showing a preview on the main menu has already worked on me a couple of times.
About four episodes in and it’s actually really good so far.

Jessica, played by Krysten Ritter, is a convincingly tough, streetwise Private Investigator with a shady past that is only just coming to light through the cases she takes on. There are some famous faces in the supporting cast but it’s very much her story, and it’s good to see a strong female lead as the driving force behind all the action.

I really don’t want to give too much away about the emerging plot line so will only say that the main antagonist is brilliantly set up. It’s set in ‘Hell’s Kitchen’, Manhatten and in the same timeline as the Avengers, although there is only a passing reference made to the aliens in New York and the Avengers team.

We’ve been spoilt rotten with superhero offerings in the last few years, particularly from the Marvel universe with the Avengers and Iron Man movies, Captain America and Guardians of the Galaxy.

I love the Avengers TV spin-off Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the previous Netflix Originals Gotham and Daredevil were both really well scripted and cast. In the DC universe the Christian Bale Batman movies have all been epic, and although the modern Superman films have been a bit iffy, we both loved Smallville.

Needless to say, Lizzie and I are both superhero fans, although we’re not as clued in on the lore from the comic books as we could be. Still it’s a great time to be a superhero fan.

Obligatory Guardians of the Galaxy ‘dance off’ clip because 😀

Do you like superhero movies/TV shows? Any recommendations?

  1. I haven’t seen that particular show but I love superhero movies/shows (like everyone else on the planet these days). I’m now (not so) patiently waiting for the Wonder Woman movie that is long overdue! I love her 🙂

    1. Haha Lizzie loves Wonder Woman but I’m just hoping for a considerate portrayal myself. I fear Hollywood will be lazy and make a dumb, sexist, voyeuristic cliché of a movie. If it’s another modern day setting done well it would be interesting though.

Jessica Jones is less of a typical superhero movie than you’d expect. It’s more of a detective thriller with a little bit of special a abilities thrown in. Daredevil was similar: more about the cases and the personalities/motivations than going overboard on special powers or mutants.

  2. I started watching last week as well, and I’m really into Jessica Jones! I’m not a huge fan of superhero movies, and am only barely familiar with the events in the Avengers, but I love the subtlety of the references in the show. It makes the story feel a lot more present and real, and it’s not as corny an approach as, for example, the new Supergirl show that’s on TV now (granted, I’ve only caught one or two episodes of that).
