    Ship’s log: 31-08-06

“..twenty three jumps for a measly 30k profit! Trading is looking to be more time-consuming and involved than I thought. My indy is too slow, even with MWDs.

Gone back to piloting my Tristan. Recently blew almost 2 mill ISK on new skills to help with targetting, missiles and mining. Have recently realised my favouring missiles doesn’t play to the Tristan’s strengths (5% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret damage and 7.5% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret tracking speed per skill level) but I like to keep those targets at a distance. Turrets are too close for my liking. I might experiment.

Recently spent just over a mill ISK buying a new ship. This time a mining barge, the Procurer. it’s the smallest ship of it’s class but a more sensible ship for mining than my indy. Both because the indy isn’t designed for mining and because people think you’re an ore thief.

I’ve still not trained up all the skills for the Procurer yet. I need Industry level 5, i’m currently at level 4 with ten days of training time left. Also Astrogeology level 3 and Mining Barge Level 1. I’ve bought both but can’t train Mining Barge until i’ve got Astrogeology to level 3 and Industry to level 5. So it’s a ten day wait and then I have to actually by the equipment for the thing – a Strip Miner, version 1 of which retails at just over a million ISK. What trading costs in time, mining costs in cold hard cash.

While training some skills – trained up targetting a couple of levels which allows me to target four ships at a time now – I’ve gone back to agent work as my main source of income. While a three hour trade run two nights ago netted me around 30k, one mission from my main agent Armibaine Chour got me 88k with a time bonus of 77k! On top of that it was a kill mission and I got bounties for killing around 18 Mordus drones. Mostly 3.5k each but a few of the harder ones were 4k and one very tough one had a bounty of 12k – all in all I made 258k in about an hour’s work! Not bad for one mission.

I don’t expect them all to be the same – the previous mission was a standard rookie shoot and got me about 30k overall – but hopefully if I can build up some loyalty i’ll get more profitable jobs.

The plan is to train up the Procurer and strip some ‘roids in high sec space. It should be quicker than using Miner II lasers and bring in a steady income hopefully. Once I get some funds together I’ll buy more kit and skills and by doing a combination of mining and missions aim for the Caracal cruiser – a pricey 4.5 mill (for a rookie anyway). I may settle for a Destroyer meantime – the middleground between a frigate and a cruiser. I recently made a new friend who was flying a Cormorant that seemed to be a worthwhile purchase. We’ll see.

Also thinking about joining a corp and have my eye on one in particular but I don’t know if I want to give up the whole freelancer thing just yet. Once I get a few more ships and the ISK to cover any losses then I might go for it.

Currently docked the Astral Mining outpost in Oursalaert II. I’ll be here awhile as my engineer Rambo is taking a couple weeks vacation. More updates to follow.

    Edward Spiegel signing off…”

Shopping. Most of us do it, and most of us enjoy it. We all like shopping for different things. Me, I like shopping for entertainment and technology. I don’t like shopping for clothes. Evidenced by the fact I have 84 PSOne games, 40 PS2 games, 33 demo discs, 20-30 PC games, seven seasons of Stargate, and atleast 40 other dvds. I have nowhere near as many good clothes.

So today the task was to go shopping for holiday clothes (you have to look good when you’re on holiday right?). Well, I got the same lethargic feeling I always get when I step into a clothes shop. Maybe it’s an invisible disease, some infectious alien spore that’s distributed by the air conditioning or something. Whatever it is, I never get it in the likes of His Master’s Voice or Virgin=)

Not that I don’t like clothes – I love wearing new clothes – I just don’t like buying them: The endless crowds of people, the wrong size, the extortionate prices, the choices or lack thereof. I’m not like every other guy these days. I don’t want the ned style tracksuit and Nike clothes, and I can’t understand the overwhelming popularity of pink clothing for men?! I also don’t like having a brand name slapped across my chest but at the same time I don’t want a cheap knockoff.

I like having cool slogans and symbols on my clothes. There should be more game-related t-shirts. I want to get a Cowboy Bebop t-shirt too but the ones i want seem to be ‘out of stock’ everywhere online.

I managed to get myself a t-shirt, jeans and a fleece today after all my searching, and I have another t-shirt on order that i’m hoping will arrive on time. I’m a very fussy clothes shopper which I why I try to discourage people from accompanying me. I spend a long time repeatedly comparing clothes and shops and trying to decide. There’s a real lack of men’s clothing shops here. For every one there’s two or three women’s stores and much more variety.

Today I simply wanted a non-descript jumper or fleece, but everywhere I looked it was t-shirts (it is summer after all) or grandad-style jumpers. In the end I got a fleece from an adventure store, but it wasn’t on sale so it wasn’t exactly a bargain. It’s comfy though.

The holiday to Nice is fast approaching and we’ve pretty much got everything. We bought a digital camera at the weekend (again I like shopping for technology). It’s pretty decent for the price and I got a memory card from Amazon so we can take lots of pictures.

I got the Euro today that we’re taking as cash for the first weekend and Falling is organising the traveller’s cheques for the bulk of our spending money. We’ll also have money in our bank accounts incase we get desperate.

I was concerned that the hotel didn’t have our booking as the ‘check booking’ section of their website couldn’t find us and Expedia weren’t very easy to contact. I phoned the hotel directly the other evening and dusted off the old French accent. Thankfully they spoke English and had our booking so I can stop worrying now.

I’ve got monday off as it’s a bank holiday and I’ve taken Friday off to travel to London. We fly to Nice on saturday. So here’s hoping the forthcoming three day week goes quickly!

I’ve had Eve running in the background with my Indy mining an asteroid field. I’m now going off to sell the fruits of my labour for what I hope is a tidy sum. If you don’t hear from me before I go on holiday, behave yourself, ya hear?

    Au revoir

I’m still around. Been here and there lately. Here’s a couple of interesting links:

Radio Jazz – listen to some smooth Jazz online (also other music types) – I have to say i’ve developed quite a liking for it. It’s nice chill out music, and the few and far between American adverts are funny.

Minushi – An animated feature about big robots. It’s in chapters just like Ninjai, but I’ve only watched the first chapter as the link for the second didn’t seem to work? It’s interesting. (no subtitles)

    That’s all folks.
